The Mount Dora Police department is looking for a few good drivers.
Thanks to a donation from a local dentist, officers are rewarding safe drivers with a $10 gift certificate to a downtown Mount Dora café or coffee shop.
“The department’s goal is to reinforce safe driving habits and say a small thanks to our community,” Deputy Police Chief Robert Bell said.
Officers will be on the lookout for motorists who are driving the posted speed limit and who are wearing their seat belts. Once identifying eligible motorists on the street, officers will introduce themselves, then explain the program, informing drivers that they are free to leave, but that they can receive a $10 gift certificate to either One Flight Up or The Village Coffee Pot in downtown Mount Dora.
Local dentist, Dr. Loyd Kiernan of Tooth Acres, donated $500 in start-up money for the program, and said he would consider donating more to the program. Due to the positive feedback, the department hopes to expand the program to include more officers and more intersections around town.
“We are extremely thankful for Dr. Kiernan’s generosity and community involvement,” Bell said. “We are very proud to be able to reward safe drivers traveling in our city. Anytime we can make a positive impact on our community and those visiting, we are happy to do so.”
