The morning of June 29 started very early for the good folks at 1921 by Norman Van Aken and Main Street Leasing.
Preparations for the breakfast began the day before. On the morning of the breakfast, crews set to work beginning at 6:30 a.m. Together they cooked, set up and served a hearty breakfast for the volunteers and clients of Lake Cares Food Pantry.
Mount Dora Cares – as do our local businesses and restauranteurs. Fare included scrambled eggs from Lake Meadow Naturals in Ocoee, potato hash with chorizo, breakfast sandwiches with bacon ham and cheddar on Old Hearth Bread, freshly squeezed Florida orange juice, and house-made apple pie.
Mayor Girone was on hand, as were council members Cal Rolfson (a Lake Cares Food Pantry volunteer) and Marie Rich. Meals were served as clients arrived to pick up weekly supplies of groceries from Lake Cares.
The breakfast was inspired by a similar donation of time, kindness and food that originated with Lake Cares Board Member and pastor, Zach Zehnder and The Cross Church of Mount Dora.
Especially touching, was the moment when a birthday cake, baked by Gloriann of 1921, was presented to WWII Vet Charles McWhorter. McWhorter, who served at the Battle of the Bulge, celebrated his 97th birthday on July 4.
